Safran and SLM Solutions evaluate SLM technology for nose gear component of a bizjet

In a joint project, Safran Landing Systems and SLM Solutions have tested Selective Laser Melting technology for the production of a nose landing gear component for a Bizjet. A world first for a component of this size.

The joint goal of the project is to prove the feasibility of manufacturing using Selective Laser Melting. The component was therefore redesigned for additive manufacturing, which resulted in time savings throughout the process and a significant weight reduction of about 15% of the component.
The component transfers the load from the wheel to the aircraft structure and is retracted after take-off. Due to the high loads and requirements on the component, Safran chose a titanium alloy, a material with very good mechanical properties that is naturally corrosion resistant and does not require any surface treatment. It also extends the life of the component.
Thierry Berenger, Project Manager Additive Manufacturing at Safran Landing Systems says: "We chose SLM Solutions as our partner because of its expertise and the SLM®800, which exactly meets our requirements in terms of machine size and reliability." With a vertically extended build envelope, the SLM®800 is perfect for producing large components. The machine is equipped with SLM Solutions' proven quad laser technology and innovative features such as patented gas flow and a permanent filter. These features ensure maximum reliability.
One of the strengths of SLM® technology is its high flexibility. Design changes can be quickly modified, manufactured and tested. Consequently, less time is needed in prototype development.
Gerhard Bierleutgeb, EVP Global Services & Solutions at SLM Solutions explains: "Additive manufacturing can save time in the qualification and certification phase. We were able to produce the component in a few days on the SLM®800. In contrast, manufacturing with the forging process takes several months. So with additive manufacturing, components are ready for testing faster in comparison."

Component information:
- Dimensions: 455x295x805 mm³.
- Material: Titanium alloy
- Machine: SLM®800

The design, developed by Safran Landing Systems, meets demanding durability and weight reduction goals and is patented.
