Comau, a world leader in the development of advanced systems and products for the industrial automation industry and a pioneer in advanced laser welding processes and applications, has created highly specialized laser laboratories to support companies in the development, implementation and optimization of laser processes in the design and assembly of electric motors and batteries. With two laboratories in Grugliasco (Turin) - one specialized in batteries and the other in electric motors - and additional laboratories in Shanghai and Detroit, Comau has strengthened its entire digital value chain and now offers a wide range of laser processes for various industries, including automotive, aerospace, general industry, energy, oil and gas.
Comau aims to increase the efficiency, speed and value of production so that companies can offer highly competitive operational solutions for electrification industries. These specialized laser laboratories are equipped with Comau NJ-220 robots that can work simultaneously and on different applications. They are based on the innovative LHYTE (Laser Hybrid Technology) system developed by Comau in partnership with Prima Electro. LHYTE is suitable for many different applications. This is made possible by a patented solution that allows automatic switching between fiber and diode lasers to ensure an optimal, high-precision connection, which is essential when assembling a battery or an electric motor. LHYTE can also cope with the complicated handling of different melting temperatures of materials such as copper and aluminum, while guaranteeing reliable seam sealing with a low electrical resistance value.
"We can produce battery packs of any type for any desired performance level and assemble the complete electric battery - from welding the individual cells of a module, to stacking the different modules of a battery pack, to laser welding the entire housing", explains Giovanni Di Stefano, Chief Technology Officer - Electrification at Comau. "We are also developing a similar solution for laser welding of Hairpin motors in our latest laboratory".
Comaus laser laboratories can be configured, equipped and adapted according to the required process and product type to be manufactured. Apart from the adaptation of different applications, Comau also develops and optimizes every phase of the laser welding process at the customer's request - from the construction of prototypes to the pre-series production. Projects are accompanied by dedicated engineers who develop or determine the best welding solution for each customer, with services ranging from feasibility studies to process optimization.
