The historic Wahlman wooden house has now been successfully transported across Metsä Group's integrated factory site to its new location in Äänekoski Art Museum Park.
Previously, the wooden house stood on a plot of land owned by Metsä Board, a leading European manufacturer of premium cardboard and a Metsä Group company. Urban restructuring had made the move necessary. The Finnish cardboard manufacturer took over all the necessary measures for the entire move and the completion of the building in line with its planned use at the new location.
The transport attracted the interest of both the public and the media, as in this case the entire building was transported. In order to put the safety of the entire measures and operations first, Metsä Board closed the transport route to external traffic for the duration of the move.
The Wahlman House, designed by architect Birger Federley and built in 1924, was originally used by senior employees of the Äänekoski mill and today has a special value from an industrial and architectural history perspective. As the building's façade is a listed building, the transport was carried out with appropriate care, preserving the building structures for reconstruction. The original natural stone foundation was also moved to the new location. There, it is now ensured that the extraordinary building will be preserved for future generations.
