Succession plan at leading folding carton manufacturer: Waterland Private Equity wants to expand Leupold's technology and quality leadership

Within the framework of a succession plan, the Waterland holding company is taking over all shares in the packaging and folding box manufacturer Leupold with its subsidiary Schneller from Schwabach in Bavaria. The aim of the partnership is to expand Leupold's technology and quality leadership and transfer it to other locations. The seller of the shares is the family that has led Leupold and Schneller in the fourth generation. The existing management team will continue to steer the company and ensure continuity. Financial details of the transaction, which is subject to the usual approval by the antitrust authorities, will not be disclosed.

Joh. Leupold GmbH & Co KG, founded in 1910, is one of the leading German producers of packaging and sales displays and, with 17,000 square meters of production space, one of the largest family-owned folding box manufacturers. The company's range of products and services extends from folding boxes, blister cards, blanks, corrugated packaging, displays and set-up boxes to individual custom-made products. Around 1.5 million state-of-the-art packages are produced every day. In addition to national customers, the traditional company also supplies well-known customers in the USA and France, including numerous branded goods groups.
Waterland is taking over Leupold and Schneller as part of a succession solution and, through the takeover, is setting the course for the establishment of a new platform in the field of folding box production. Over the next few years, organic growth and targeted acquisitions are intended to establish a European quality leader in folding carton production and gain additional market share.
"In the past years we have continuously invested in the technical design of our processes and thus ensured a positive and sustainable company development for our employees and customers. With the implementation of our succession plan, we now want to herald a new phase of development for Leupold and have brought on board an experienced specialist for growth strategies in Waterland," explains Reiner Kamphausen, Managing Director of Leupold. His colleague Bernd Aßmann adds: "The Waterland team has an impressive track record in terms of succession and development at a large number of medium-sized companies. We are confident that we have found the optimum solution for our customers and employees through the partnership with Waterland and look forward to the next steps".
Dr. Carsten Rahlfs, Managing Partner at Waterland, says: "Leupold und Schneller are operating in a market of the future - retailers and consumers are increasingly attaching importance to environmentally friendly, sustainable packaging solutions; especially in online retailing, which is gaining strength not least as a result of the corona crisis, demand for folding cartons continues to grow. The company is excellently positioned in this environment thanks to its high level of customer orientation and, in particular, its technical pioneering role compared to its competitors. For us this is the ideal basis for expanding international growth step by step and extending our quality leadership to Europe. In this context, it is particularly important to us to provide optimum support for the customers of Leupold and Schneller.
