Printing Industries of America is pleased to announce Dinesh Tyagi, Ph.D., Lexmark International, is the recipient of the 2014 Robert F. Reed Technology Medal, recognizing outstanding engineers, scientists, inventors, and researchers in the graphic communications industry. Dr. Tyagi has an extraordinary career with more than 300 patents and contributions to electrophotographic toner technology.
Established in 1974, the Reed Technology Medal perpetuates the memory of Robert F. Reed (1905–1973), "Dean of Lithography," whose contributions to the understanding of lithographic processes and materials were perhaps the most significant of his time. Nominations were judged by a small committee of past Reed Medal recipients and representatives of Printing Industries of America's Ben Franklin Honor Society.
Dinesh Tyagi received his Ph.D. from Virginia Tech in 1985 from the Department of Chemical Engineering. After one year of holding a post-doctoral position there, he joined Eastman Kodak Company as a Research Scientist, where he specialized in the field of digital printing and polymer research. He was inducted into Kodak's Distinguished Inventors Gallery in 1994. In 1999 he joined NexPress Solutions, which was later acquired back by Kodak.
Dr. Tyagi recently joined Lexmark International where he continues to work in the area of toners and electrophotography as he has done through most of his professional career. Dr. Tyagi has been granted more than 300 patents worldwide. In 2011 he was awarded the Chester F. Carlson Award for his innovations and broad contributions to electrophotographic toner technology.
"The research and developments carried out by Dr. Tyagi have become synonymous with modern digital presses from the initial launch of the NexPress in 2000, through the improvements in quality achieved by these devices and the introduction of new toner technologies, including clear coatings, expanded-gamut toners, tactile effects, fluorescing toners, security features, and more recently the introduction of the previously not achieved metallic and pearlescent effects with digital toner," commented Dr. Mark Bohan, Vice President of Technology and Research, Printing Industries of America. "This award recognizes the significant impact and breadth of research carried out by Dr. Tyagi, a truly worthy recipient of this prestigious award."
This year's Reed Award will be presented at The 67th Annual Technical Conference TAGA, March 22–25, 2015, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
