Prof. Dr. Armin Schnettler is the new president of the technology organization VDE

The CEO of New Energy Business at Siemens Energy focuses on safety, security and sustainability
100,000 volunteer experts, 1,500 member companies and 2,000 employees - VDE covers the entire spectrum of electrical engineering, from information technology to energy, medical technology and microelectronics

Prof. Dr. Armin Schnettler (57 years old) is the new VDE President. Schnettler, CEO New Energy Business at Siemens Energy, is the successor to Dr. Gunther Kegel, CEO of Pepperl + Fuchs AG, who changes to ZVEI (Central Association of the Electrical Industry) as President. Deputy VDE President is Alf Henryk Wulf, member of the Supervisory Board of Software AG. Schnettler has been active in the VDE for many years and, as Chairman of the Energy Technology Society in the VDE (VDE ETG), was a major driver of the issues of the energy transition and network expansion. "In my term as VDE President, I would like to focus the VDE even more on the topics of sustainability and 'Energy of the Future' as well as safety and security. I am pleased that in the VDE network, together with more than 100,000 volunteer experts and 1,500 companies, I can advance technologies for a future worth living. Together we strive - and I have no doubt that we will succeed - to become THE neutral and competent technical-scientific partner for industry, politics and especially society ”, is how the new VDE President outlines his goals.
Armin Schnettler studied and did his doctorate in electrical engineering at the University of Dortmund. After completing his doctorate, the new VDE President moved to ABB in 1992, where he held various positions. From 1998 to 2000 he was a member of the executive board of ABB, business area "High Voltage Substations" in Zurich, Switzerland. In 2001 Schnettler returned to science and researched until 2018 as head of the Institute for High Voltage Technology at RWTH Aachen. From 2003 to 2013, he was on the board of the research association for electrical systems and electricity management in parallel to his engagement on the VDE. In 2013, the native of Hagen joined the Siemens group. As Senior Vice President, he headed the “New Technology Fields” area at Siemens AG Corporate Technology from 2013 to 2015. From 2016 to 2020, Schnettler rose to head Siemens Energy and Electronics Group Research at Siemens AG. He has been Executive Vice President since 2020 and is accompanying the IPO as CEO New Energy Business at Siemens Energy.
