The Global Dental CAD/CAM System Market Will See Strong Growth to Reach a Value of Over $760 Million in 2022

Rising Awareness of Potential Cost and Efficiency Savings Will Spur Rising Adoption, According to Findings from Decision Resources Group

Decision Resources Group finds that high cost and low awareness of dental computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) systems have historically impeded adoption. However, as training programs increasingly educate dentists and technicians on the speed, accuracy and potential long-term cost savings associated with these systems, they will be increasingly adopted over manual restoration manufacturing methods.

Consequently, the dental CAD/CAM market will see accelerating market growth, reaching a value surpassing $760 million in 2022.

Other key findings from Decision Resources Group's coverage of the global dental CAD/CAM system market:

  • Increased competition: The entry of new competitors—particularly in the lucrative chairside system segment—will be accompanied by new marketing initiatives that will generate interest in the dental community. Many new systems will offer comparable performance to Sirona's gold-standard systems at a lower price, driving uptake among cost-conscious dentists.
  • Product differentiation: With the entry of similar products to the market, companies will increasingly attempt to differentiate themselves through customer service, strong technical support and training and flexible purchasing options.
  • The United States, Germany and Japan: The U.S. and Germany are the most well-developed markets, and competitors will have the most difficulty trying to gain share in these regions. There is also significant potential for adoption of dental CAD/CAM technology in Japan due to the large number of dentists and their willingness to use CAD/CAM systems to differentiate themselves from their competition. Competitors will continue to have difficulty entering Japan, however, due to the rigorous product approval process.

Comments from Decision Resources Group Analyst David Lee:

"Intraoral scanners will see particularly rapid adoption in the next few years as dentists increasingly use these devices as a means of incorporating CAD/CAM technology into their practices without the purchase of a complete chairside system. Intraoral scanners allow dentists to take digital impressions and outsource the files to local or foreign milling centers to manufacture the restorations. This increases convenience, efficiency and patient comfort without the higher expense and technical expertise required of full chairside systems."
"Many new competitors will offer systems with open architecture software, which allows dentists and technicians to purchase and use associated materials from other companies, which might be available at a lower cost. This trend will be particularly important for milling centers because this allows them to accept digital files from a broader array of scanners. These systems will threaten Sirona's market dominance, given that the company's systems feature closed architecture software, and dentists and labs using these systems must purchase all associated products from Sirona."
