Dow unveils new pressure sensitive solutions for challenging paper and film label applications

New silicone release coatings and acrylic adhesives solutions enable label producers and converters to increase production efficiency while reducing costs.

Dow (NYSE: DOW) will introduce at Labelexpo Europe 2019 a range of new SYL-OFFTM silicone release coatings and INVISUTM acrylic adhesives designed for challenging paper and film label applications. With the new offering Dow expands its comprehensive portfolio for pressure sensitive label applications with solutions that address key market trends and enable manufacturers and converters make material and energy savings while enhancing processing performance.
“As a global leader in acrylic adhesives, silicone-based technologies and polyethylene resin, Dow is constantly searching to bring new solutions to the market that do more for our customers,” commented Meike Wesseling, Global Segment Leader Release Coating at Dow. “With this new range of silicone release coatings and high solids acrylic adhesives we provide customers the opportunity to boost their competitiveness in the market by reducing costs and improving the footprint of the end products.”
The new pressure sensitive solutions introduced by Dow at Labelexpo are:
• SYL-OFFTM SL 351 Release Coating: Addressing the demand for more porous cost- efficient substrate paper, this coating specifically designed for porous paper and hygiene applications, reduces soak-in enabling a lower coat-weight. It allows manufacturers to realize cost savings by using less expensive paper and less silicone with fewer platinum, thus reducing total cost-in-use compared to other systems.
• INVISUTM 3000: A waterborne, high solids acrylic pressure sensitive adhesive base for permanent self-adhesive paper labels. A versatile solution designed to be formulated for curtain and gravure applications, offering a reliable adhesion on glass and cardboard. Features 69% high solids content for enhanced productivity and reduced energy demand.
• INVISUTM 4100: A waterborne, high solids curtain coatable acrylic adhesive for permanent self-adhesive filmic labels. A well-balanced solution suitable for a wide range of applications offering excellent adhesion to low surface energy substrates, like HDPE, without compromising on shear resistance performance. Its high solids content makes it suitable for high speed curtain coating assets.
• INVISUTM 3200: A waterborne, high solids acrylic for gravure coating for self-adhesive paper labels. A ready to coat water-based adhesive combining minimum energy in conversion with maximum productivity on multiple gravure coating technologies. It offers unique solid contents, adaptable viscosity profile, unparalleled affinity to low and high surface energy materials, combined with high cohesion.
Additionally, Dow will be featuring innovative silicon-based release coatings and modifiers responding to market needs for enhanced production efficiency and sustainability:
• SYL-OFFTM EM-7953 Release Coating: A water-based emulsion release coatings system offering greater formulation flexibility, allowing to meet environmental, health and safety regulations and providing a suitable alternative to traditional solvent-based coating systems for PET.
• SYL-OFFTM SL 25 Release Modifier: Designed to address the increasing challenging processing and converting conditions and performance requirements, this solventless formulation enables a flatter release profile and reduces VOC emissions, representing a new standard in pressure sensitive labels.
“Label manufacturers and converters operate in an increasingly competitive market, facing material and processing cost pressures,” explains Stevi Liakopoulou, EMEA Marketing Manager Acrylics Adhesives at Dow. “We are looking forward to Labelexpo to listen to their needs, share our expertise and explore how we can collaborate to design innovative technologies that are more sustainable and enhance cost and efficiency performance”.
