Henkel reduces packaging and plastic waste with new design of pallet securing adhesive

A new innovation from Henkel Adhesive Technologies reduces the need for disposable plastic films and packaging materials when transporting goods on pallets. Palletising is an essential part of modern supply chains, but until now it has required large quantities of plastic films, interlayers and anti-slip mats to stabilise and secure stacked goods. The leading adhesive manufacturer's new Technomelt Supra 7220 PS Easyflow fundamentally changes this.

The hot melt adhesive significantly reduces the need for film and pallet stretch wrap - in some cases, these packaging materials can be completely eliminated. As a result, manufacturers, logisticians, distributors and retailers are reducing material usage and waste, enabling them to meet increasingly demanding sustainability targets. With Technomelt Supra 7220 PS Easyflow, Henkel is helping the industry rethink current palletising processes. By using the highly efficient adhesive, large amounts of plastic can be saved for packaging, while achieving greater safety and process efficiency through Henkel's innovative Easyflow adhesive format.
"We know how important the issue of sustainability is for the packaging industry and society as a whole," explains Stephan Hähnert, Business Development Manager Sustainability for Consumer Goods Adhesives at Henkel. "With solutions like Technomelt Supra 7220 PS Easyflow, we can help our customers meet high sustainability standards and support their efforts to reduce plastic waste. At the same time, we can help make production and logistics processes more efficient and cost-effective. Through our new Easyflow packaging system, developed as an innovative solution for an automated, closed system, we can create a safer working environment and minimise downtime."
Henkel's new solution enables palletising of various materials with no or very little plastic film and is suitable for all types of filled goods. A hot melt adhesive joins the outer packs together in an automated process. This fixes the pallets securely. Depending on the packaged product, the adhesives can be adjusted to achieve the desired performance. By reducing the amount of packaging material, the transport of goods on pallets becomes much more sustainable and efficient. In addition to reducing the cost of plastic films and eliminating the need for anti-slip mats and the intermediate layers required for palletising, this solution also eliminates the additional cost and environmental impact of disposing of materials. Additionally, the glued cardboard packaging can be recycled, which increases sustainability in the supply chain. For retailers, the solution offers easier and faster de-palletising - also enabling full automation of the process.
More safety and efficiency with Technomelt Supra 7220 PS Easyflow
In addition to optimising logistics, the solution contributes to a new standard of safety for production line operators by eliminating manual handling of hot melt and potential exposure to high temperatures. The closed-loop, automatic feeding system, which allows for distance feeding when stored off the production line for added flexibility, also supports a cleaner and safer working environment. By avoiding contamination in the system, this innovative solution also reduces equipment maintenance. In addition, process performance and efficiency increase significantly thanks to the innovative packaging format of the adhesive. Designed for all production lines, the non-sticky mini pads can flow freely to allow the automatic feeding system from the adhesive side. This ensures a steady supply of adhesive to the melters as needed, without interruptions or temperature fluctuations that can affect performance.
