Bio E - a big step towards barrier coatings completely without fossil raw materials

Holmen Iggesund is launching cartonboard with Bio E, a barrier coating made from 75 per cent renewable raw materials and approved for industrial composting.

Cartonboard packaging solutions represent a welcome opportunity for change for many food and beverage brands looking to reduce their plastic consumption and CO2 emissions. Although this is a huge improvement in terms of sustainability, barrier coatings laminated to cardboard to protect food are still largely made from fossil-based plastics.
But now Holmen has Iggesund Bio E on offer, a barrier coating that is made from 75 per cent renewable raw materials. "The previous generation of bio-based barrier coatings consisted of only about 30 per cent renewable raw materials. So Bio E represents a huge improvement. Moreover, Bio E has also been approved for industrial composting," says Per Berglund, Product Manager Value added Products at Holmen Iggesund.
Bio E is a huge step forward in the ongoing efforts to develop barrier coatings without any fossil raw materials at all, but which are still on a par with conventional plastic (PE)-based barrier coatings in terms of robustness, safety and functionality.
This bio-based coating is resistant to liquids as well as grease. It meets European requirements as well as those of the US FDA for food contact products, making it suitable for all types of food packaging.
In addition, Bio E is also approved for use in the microwave.
Bio E is available in combination with a number of different cartons from Holmen Iggesund.
