Photographer Peter Lebeda deals with the plastic pollution of the seas in an aesthetic-abstract way
Exhibition "TIEFSEE" at the Epson Digigraphie Galerie Zingst
Peter Lebeda currently exhibits as the first of two winners of this year's Epson Digigraphie photo competition in Zingst.
The photographer from Mainz convinced the jury in the competition category "Water - more precious than gold" with his photo series "TIEFSEE". In it, Lebeda deals with the thoughtless consumption of plastic as a packaging material, which could drive nature and mankind into a catastrophe by polluting the seas with waste. His photographic approach is not documentary; instead, Lebeda stages his own plastic waste in the studio, drawing on learned visual worlds.
Photographed with polarized light, Peter Lebeda's theme is the waste compaction in the oceans in an almost frighteningly beautiful way. Plastic packaging is transformed into mysterious DEEP-SEA creatures that appear in the spotlight cone of a submarine. They drift timelessly in eternal darkness. No place, no point of view that would help us to determine them.
An apocalyptic vision or reality?
A large proportion of our plastic waste ends up in the oceans of our world. According to current estimates, some 80 million tons have accumulated on the ocean floor alone.
The series of pictures will be ceremonially honored in the form of a finissage at the end of the exhibition on October 1, 2020, at 4:30 pm.
Peter Lebeda was born in 1966 in Lohr am Main. After studying at the FH Dortmund and graduating as a photo designer, he worked in photo studios in Stuttgart, Frankfurt and Wiesbaden. Since 2012 he has been working as a freelancer and in his work he is always dealing with the interfaces of culture and nature. As a "photographic purist", Lebeda creates images of great suggestive power that go far beyond the mere depiction of the subject.
