Walki presents sustainable barrier solutions at Packaging Innovations Birmingham

Walki, a leading manufacturer of packaging solutions, will be presenting their portfolio of sustainable barrier boards and flexible packaging materials at Packaging Innovations in Birmingham, UK, on 26 and 27 February. Applications of the versatile grades include fresh goods, frozen foods and confectionery as well as non-food articles such as cleaning agents, hygiene products or electronics. Furthermore, the company delivers packaging materials with organic-based coatings for the food service and to-go sector. Visitors can consult Walki at booth D46.

Walki has established a sustainability platform called "Zero Waste Future". With this platform, the company aims to develop specific packaging solutions for its customers' products while minimizing waste in a holistic manner – both food and packaging waste. The aim is to keep materials in a cycle by either recycling or composting them. By 2030, the company plans to offer all its products to be renewable, recyclable or compostable.
At the trade fair in Birmingham, Walki presents a wide range of barrier board and flexible packaging materials replacing conventional fossil-based barriers with sustainable alternatives: Walki-Wood uses a coating based on tall oil, a renewable raw material which occurs as a by-product in the pulp production process and which offers identical barrier properties as fossil-based LDPE. The coating of Walki-Bio contains approximately 75 percent PLA (= poly lactic acid) and is industrially compostable. Walki-BioPBS is made with a coating of PBS (= poly butylene succinate) obtained from maize. It is industrially compostable and additionally suitable for the normal recycling process. Walki-EC (EC = Earth Coating) was specially developed for an optimized recycling process. The coating contains minerals and can therefore be separated particularly cleanly from the carton or paper on which it is applied. Walki-Circular uses certified circular polymers which are manufactured in an innovative process from low-value, mixed plastic household waste. They thus enable the recycling cycle to be closed. Walki informs and advises Packaging Innovations visitors about the ideal coating for individual applications at booth D46.
Since the acquisition of Plastiroll Oy, a Finnish sustainable packaging material producer, in 2019,
Walki has significantly broadened their offering of sustainable packaging materials including compostable bags and films as well as recyclable dispersion coated fibre-based packaging. These products and applications will be displayed at Packaging Innovations as well.
