If the packaging contributes to the sustainability of the product

At the German spice manufacturer Aromica, environmentally friendly cardboard cans from Sonoco ideally complement the sustainable products

Delivering fine taste and first-class product quality is the mission of every professional chef. For culinary creations that make the guests' mouths water, it takes craftsmanship and a good instinct, but also first-class ingredients. This is where the high-quality spices of 'Aromica Tradizio' come into play: the selection of organic spices and spice mixtures meets the high demands of professional chefs and culinary enthusiasts, without neglecting environmental issues. For the environmentally friendly packaging, the German manufacturer relies on sturdy cardboard cans from Sonoco Europe. They consist of a recyclable cardboard sleeve and a biodegradable cork lid, optimally protecting the precious contents and thus reflecting Aromica's claim to sustainability.
As a trained chef, Aromica founder and managing director Rudolf Rehrl had the vision to produce a product that is not only first-class in terms of quality and taste, but also convinces through its environmental friendliness. He recognized an increased demand for premium spices among many chefs and deduced the potential for Aromica from this: "As a chef, you are constantly tinkering with new and surprising dishes to impress your guests. Unusual and high-quality ingredients are a decisive basis and source of inspiration for this. With our 'Aromica Tradizio' line, we can now also meet the increasing demands of our customers for organic products - and in addition to the catering trade, we also see the opportunity to sell our products in selected food stores", explains Rehrl. Currently, the 'Aromica Tradizio' line, which includes rare organic spices such as opal basil and mountain pine from the Alps, is available in Italy, Austria and recently also in Germany.
Paper and cork as a perfect complement
Thanks to the environmentally friendly packaging, the spices already stand out visually from the competition on the supermarket shelf, retain their outstanding taste and first-class quality, and thus appeal to both professional chefs and passionate hobby cooks. Rudolf Rehrl sees the cooperation with Sonoco as an important factor in the success of his company: "We always pursue the goal of offering our customers new and exciting quality products - and that without having to compromise on sustainability. Thanks to Sonoco, we can achieve just that".
Sonoco produces the cardboard packaging for 'Aromica Tradizio' at its plant in Montanay, France. The 73 mm diameter cans are made of several environmentally friendly materials: the cardboard sleeve is laminated with a thin, aluminium-free film that allows the packaging to be recycled via paper waste. The resealable cork lid, on the other hand, can be disposed of with the organic waste. This coherent recycling concept fits perfectly with Aromica's holistic approach: "We source our ingredients from independent local farmers according to the seasons. In the end, we package them responsibly. That's what well thought-out sustainability looks like to me in every processing step," says Rehrl.
A reliable partner for sustainability
Sonoco produces tailor-made packaging solutions in every respect for both multinational and regional companies. Francesco Giannolo, Sales Director Sonoco Consumer Products Europe, is delighted about the cooperation with the German spice manufacturer: "Our collaboration with Aromica is a good example of how we develop packaging that perfectly matches the profile of the respective brand. We offer highly functional packaging that stands out in the supermarket and turns our customers' vision into reality. In the case of Aromica, we worked with the customer to develop innovative packaging components that perfectly fit the dynamic start-up character of the brand and thus lay the foundation for growth in the coming years.
