New DEVONthink To Go 3.0

DEVONtechnologies releases DEVONthink To Go 3.0, the iOS counterpart to its Mac-based document and information management solution DEVONthink. The new version, which is available in the App Store as a new app, brings modern iOS features like multiple windows and pointer support on iPad as well as dark mode and context menus on all devices. Version 3.0 also offers on-device OCR for converting scans to searchable PDFs, and Shortcuts actions for automation. Almost every aspect of the app has been touched for better usability, performance, and reliability.

DEVONthink To Go is DEVONtechnologies’ mobile document and information manager. It stores files of any kind in searchable databases on the device where users can organize them to their needs in groups or with tags. Many file formats can be directly viewed, edited, and annotated, or, if not, opened for editing in other apps. Databases are integrated as a virtual file system into the Files app.

Sophisticated organization tools, AI-based techniques that handle even the largest collections, and numerous integration options make DEVONthink the work environment of choice for researchers, lawyers, and educators. Smart rules, flexible reminders, and deep AppleScript support allow automating even complex repeating tasks. And with its fast, reliable, and secure synchronization users keep their data available on all their Macs. DEVONthink To Go for iPad and iPhone completes the DEVONthink ecosystem.

New in DEVONthink To Go 3.0

For version 3.0 almost all aspects of DEVONthink To Go have been overhauled, from the user interface to the database layer, and many iOS technologies incorporated.

Dark mode support makes the app easier on the eyes in low-light conditions. On iPad it supports windows, side-by-side or in multiple scenes, as well as the trackpad or mouse pointer. Context menus for databases, groups, and documents present commonly used actions from opening the info popover to sharing.

More changes in version 3.0 make organizing and working with documents more convenient: documents can be opened for editing in other apps, multiple items can be selected by swiping, and recent destinations make moving or replicating items much faster. Like its Mac counterpart, DEVONthink To Go 3 shows inboxes, trashes, and the Tags groups optionally unified on its database screen. New predefined smart groups list, e.g., documents with a rating. Searching immediately returns items with a matching title before digging deeper in the full-text index.

These changes alone give DEVONthink To Go users a huge productivity boost. Especially the context menus and, on an iPad, the ability to keep it open together with multiple other apps make browsing and organizing documents on a mobile device a very different, better experience.

Scans can be converted to searchable PDFs with DEVONthink To Go’s on-device OCR. Markdown enthusiasts will like MultiMarkdown 6 support including CriticMarkup as well as the ability to use robust item links to link to resources like images, videos, or CSS stylesheets. Version 3.0 also brings ratings and document annotations over from the Mac.

For synchronizing databases between iOS devices and Macs running DEVONthink 3.6.2 or later, DEVONthink To Go 3 adds a new sync location type using iCloud’s CloudKit database backend instead of its file services. It transfers data fully synchronous and does not need the CPU and battery-intensive upload monitoring. It is also faster and more reliable. Automatic syncs happen more frequently in the background and DEVONthink To Go processes items faster and chunks data more efficiently.

With acquiring Shortcuts and extending it massively, Apple has made serious automation possible on iOS. DEVONthink To Go 3 offers a range of Shortcuts actions from locating and retrieving documents and groups to manipulating them from scripts. This allows for unprecedented integration of DEVONthink databases with third-party apps on iOS.

And finally, DEVONthink To Go 3 brings also many under-the-hood improvements. For example, maintenance tasks like deleting data from the full-text index now run in the background when the device is sleeping and connected to external power.

With the new capabilities Apple added to iPadOS and iOS, from multi-window support to context menus and Shortcuts actions, managing even larger document collections is now possible. Like its Mac counterpart, DEVONthink To Go strives to integrate as much as possible into the iOS ecosystem, from the Files app to automation with Shortcuts. And with version 3 we now have an updated code base for new features and improvements.

DEVONthink To Go 3 is available as a new app in the App Store to give version 2 customers the choice to upgrade or stick with the older version.
