Metsä Board's sustainability targets for 2030: no more fossil fuels in board mills

Metsä Board, a Metsä Group company and a leading European manufacturer of premium fresh fibre board, has published its sustainability targets for 2030. For example, the company wants to stop using fossil fuels in board mills by 2030 and completely eliminate fossil CO2 emissions. This ambitious target applies both to emissions from the company's own energy production (scope 1) and to purchased energy (scope 2). Currently, 82% of Metsä Board's board mills' energy needs come from non-fossil sources.

In addition, Metsä Board aims to reduce water consumption per tonne produced by 30% and increase energy efficiency by at least 10% by 2030 compared to 2018. These issues will also play an important role in achieving the goal of eliminating the use of fossil fuels in board mills.
"The new targets communicate our commitment to combating climate change in line with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. Of course, this cannot be achieved without investment. Our recently published plan to modernize Metsä Board's pulp mill in Husum is an important step on our way to full independence of fossil fuel production," said Mika Joukio, CEO of Metsä Board.
As the main raw material for board production, Metsä Board uses renewable and 100% traceable wood from sustainably managed northern European forests. Metsä Board has set itself the target of sourcing at least 90% of all wood raw materials from certified sources by 2030. In 2018, the proportion of certified wood raw materials within the company was 79%.
Metsä Board is part of the Metsä Group, which already acts as an important CO2 sink, as more CO2 is already bound than emitted in its manufacturing processes. Metsä Board's sustainability goals are based on the Metsä Group's strategic sustainability goals for 2030.
