Energy system transformation as a competitive advantage

With the Fridays-for-Future movement, the pressure has grown to vigorously pursue the energy and traffic turnaround. TÜV SÜD certifications offer energy producers and energy consumers the opportunity to document their activities. At E-world 2020, TÜV SÜD will be presenting a broad spectrum of certifications - from GreenHydrogen and green electricity to the Energy Turnaround Company (EWU). (Hall 1, Booth 1-413)

A key technology of the energy system transformation is the sector coupling, which connects the electricity, heat and gas industry as well as the mobility sector with each other and enables a better balance with fluctuations of renewable energies and CO2-reduced mobility. "A special role is played by gas networks, which can already store, transport and use large amounts of energy in all sectors," says Klaus Nürnberger, Head of Energy Certification at TÜV SÜD Industrie Service GmbH. Power-to-gas technologies also make it possible to use these storage options for renewable energies, above all through the production of hydrogen from surplus renewable energy electricity. The direct use of "green" hydrogen in the chemical, oil and steel industries will also be in increasing demand, according to the TÜV SÜD expert.

In connection with the energy revolution, "green" hydrogen will play a central role as a storage and carrier medium. "This applies above all to the area of the much-cited traffic turnaround, where hydrogen and fuel cell technology will or must supplement battery-supported electromobility," explains Klaus Nürnberger. The GreenHydrogen certification from TÜV SÜD or the European CertifHy Scheme can prove that hydrogen is actually produced from renewable energy sources and that it has significant CO2 reductions compared with conventional energy sources or fuels. The company will also be presenting its proven certifications for sustainable energy products such as green electricity, biomethane and biofuels at E-world.
Proof from source to delivery

The dominant principle underlying all product certifications is credible proof from source to delivery to consumers. The principle of regionality is becoming increasingly important, and TÜV SÜD experts take this into account in their catalogues of criteria for individual products. "We have the energy markets in our sights and are continuously developing our catalogues of criteria," emphasises Klaus Nürnberger. According to the TÜV SÜD expert, regionality also plays an important role in the possible continued operation of wind turbines or solar power plants when government subsidies under the Renewable Energy Sources Act expire and a decision is made on whether to continue operating them economically without subsidies.

Extension of the Energy Turnaround Company Certificate

The certification "Energiewendeunternehmen (EWU)" is much more comprehensive than the certification of sustainable energy products. The certification is based on a broad catalogue of criteria which translates the most important principles of the German energy system transformation into concrete requirements. EWU certification was initially aimed at energy suppliers, who were thus able to document their future viability in a market that is subject to major change. "In the meantime, we have revised our catalogue of criteria," explains Nürnberger. "In the future, manufacturing companies and service providers will also be able to be certified as energy turnaround companies if they meet the demanding requirements for this certification.
