In 2019, Neste's renewable products helped customers in different regions reduce greenhouse gas emissions by a total of 9.6 million tonnes*. This amount corresponds to the average annual carbon balance of 1.5 million EU citizens (source: World Bank) or 3.5 million cars.
"Nestle's business model aims to help our customers in the transport, aviation, polymer and chemical industries to make their own business more sustainable. We are very proud that our renewable products such as Neste MY Renewable Diesel™ and Neste MY Renewable Jet Fuel™ help our customers and partners reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. These products provide high quality and immediately accessible renewable solutions to reduce emissions from transport or aviation," said Peter Vanacker, President and CEO of Neste.
"We made two ambitious climate pledges last year. First, we want to reduce our customers' greenhouse gas emissions by at least 20 million annual tons of CO2 equivalent by 2030, using renewable and circular solutions. The leap from 7.9 million tons of greenhouse gases saved in 2018 to 9.6 million tons in 2019 was a good start. Our second promise is to reduce the carbon footprint of our own production faster than the EU's climate and energy targets. A concrete example of this is the long-term agreement on wind power at our Finnish production sites," Vanacker continues.
Focus on capacity, innovation and cooperation
Neste is also committed to expanding its unique global platform for raw materials from waste and residual materials. In 2019, renewable waste and residual materials accounted for 80 percent of the total consumption of renewable raw materials. The company is also investing, beyond the currently available sources of raw materials, in the search for new scalable raw materials and the technologies required to produce them.
"We are convinced that cooperation is the key to success. By working together, we can drive the industry forward, reduce emissions and help tackle the climate crisis," Vanacker adds.
Neste has steadily increased the volume of its renewable products over more than ten years. Today, the company can produce three million tonnes of renewable products annually in its refineries in Finland, the Netherlands and Singapore. Of these, around 100,000 tonnes are currently available for renewable aircraft fuel. The capacity expansion in Singapore will increase Neste's annual capacity to almost 4.5 million tonnes in 2022, of which around one million tonnes will be for renewable aviation fuel.
