Neste sets itself the ambitious goal of climate-neutral production by 2035

Neste is committed to achieving climate-neutral production by 2035. The new pledge complements Neste's existing strategic climate commitment to reduce its own customers' greenhouse gas emissions by at least 20 million tonnes per year by 2030.

"Neste's goal is to create a healthier planet for our children. To this end, we offer our customers renewable and circular solutions. But we must also work to reduce the direct climate impact of our own activities. That is why we have set ourselves the concrete goal of achieving climate-neutral production by 2035. This is a truly ambitious undertaking, the implementation of which will require new ways of thinking, innovation and different forms of cooperation," says Peter Vanacker, President and CEO of Neste.

Neste will analyse all aspects of greenhouse gas emissions in manufacturing. The company has already defined more than 50 measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in production*. These include the following initiatives:

Further focus on energy efficiency to optimise the use of gas, electricity, hydrogen and steam in production. The improvement in the overall overhaul of the Porvoo refinery in 2020 will reduce production-related missions by more than 100 kt CO2e per year;
increased use of green electricity at the production sites. For example, Neste has already decided to start using wind energy in Finland;
increased weighting of greenhouse gas emissions in investment calculations and in the calculation of business scenarios;
Testing new, lower-emission production methods such as the use of biogas or electrolysis in hydrogen production;
an ongoing project at the Porvoo production site to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, focusing on carbon capture and storage;
Determination of reliable compensation models for the remaining quantities that cannot be eliminated by emission reductions.
"I would like to thank our dedicated employees for their hard work in identifying concrete cross-company measures. Reducing emissions is both a basic requirement and a major challenge for our industry. Together with our partners, we are actively seeking new technologies and solutions to make this change possible," Vanacker continues.

Neste is working on a detailed plan and timeframe for the implementation of the individual initiatives with a clear strategic goal - climate-neutral production by 2035. The commitment is in line with Finland's ambitious goal of becoming climate-neutral by 2035 and is ahead of the European Union's target for 2050.

In addition to the commitment to climate-neutral production, Neste will offset the emissions of its business flights by using the company's own sustainable aviation fuel. This goal is to be achieved together with partners in the aviation industry. The company has already joined KLM's biofuel programme in 2019 and in March 2020 announced a partnership with Finnair to reduce emissions from Neste employees on Finnair flights through the use of sustainable aircraft fuel.

*) Production covers emissions in areas 1 and 2 in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.
