Working together for a sustainable future: Rhenser mineral water now in Tetra Pak

Sustainable carton packaging and state-of-the-art filling technology / Ceremony in Rhens to mark the commissioning of the new Tetra Top® filling line for mineral water

Rhenser Mineralbrunnen now also offers its mineral waters in Tetra Pak. Yesterday, Christian and Friedrich Berentzen, the managing directors of Rhens, together with Stephan Karl, the head of Tetra Pak Germany, officially commissioned the new filling line for Tetra Top carton packaging. This marks a significant milestone for the future viability and sustainability of Rhenser Mineralbrunnen.

The Minister of the Interior of Rhineland-Palatinate, Roger Lewentz, and the Lord Mayor of the City of Koblenz, David Langner, paid tribute to the successful cooperation of the two companies at the ceremony on site in Rhens and emphasised the great importance of the investment not only for Rhenser but also for the region - especially in the current Corona times.
"In the changing consumer behaviour, future-oriented containers are playing an increasingly important role in addition to health, quality and attractive brand concepts. That is why we have invested several million euros in Rhens to open up new markets with Tetra Top packaging. These include drugstores, convenience, the organic sector, export and also B2B. The new packaging is also an important step for us in the direction of climate protection," says Christian Berentzen, one of the two managing directors of Rhenser Mineralbrunnen GmbH.
The Tetra Top packaging consists of 88 percent renewable raw materials and can be completely recycled. Paper fibres are used for the body of the packaging. The closures, the top area and the outer coating are made of the renewable raw material sugar cane. The packaging is FSC® and Bonsucro certified. In terms of design, it offers a high degree of individualisation.
Stephan Karl, Managing Director of Tetra Pak DACH, is also pleased about the successful cooperation with Rhenser, which also represents a novelty for his company:
"Water in a Tetra Top package is a novelty in Germany and in the entire DACH region; so far, we have known the package in the soft drinks sector mainly from markets such as the USA and the UK. For us, this partnership is a great example of how well packaging and product innovations complement each other to appeal to new consumer groups."
In Rhens, Tetra Pak did not just provide the equipment, but delivered a complete end-to-end concept, from process technology to palletising equipment, service and training to support on sustainability issues.
Markus Wolf, plant manager at Rhenser Mineralbrunnen, praises the quality, high technical level, precision and safety of the line:
"The Tetra Top filling line produces 9,000 packages per hour, which is quite a number for carton packaging. We are incredibly proud to be the first mineral water bottlers to introduce the Tetra Top and were very enthusiastic about the technology right from the start, just as we were about the professionalism of the cooperation. Having it in Rhens now is a dream come true."
Friedrich Berentzen, Managing Director of Rhenser Mineralbrunnen was pleased with the initial interest even before the official launch of the Tetra Top from Rhenser:
"We already have the first attractive orders from trade and export," Berentzen said. "We have still mineral water and WasserPlus drinks in our portfolio. Neither sugar nor sweeteners are used here, so we offer a real alternative to the current consumer trend for less sugar in food and beverages. Tetra Top opens up new markets for us and expands our distribution. It fits perfectly into our strategic concept of making the company more social, health-oriented and ecological."
Parallel to the Tetra Top commissioning, singer Thomas Anders gave the starting signal for two charity projects by Rhenser at the same time: on the one hand, a WasserGlück charity edition, the proceeds of which will go to the Kinderschutzbund Koblenz, and on the other hand, the "training container" project of BeLu Ugandahilfe.
