The Conference Board Leading Economic Index® (LEI) for the U.K. declined 0.4 percent in September to 112.1 (2004 = 100), following a 0.4 percent increase in August, and a 0.1 percent increase in July.
At the same time, The Conference Board Coincident Economic Index® (CEI) for the U.K., a measure of current economic activity, increased 0.1 percent in September to 107.8 (2004 = 100), following a 0.2 percent increase in August, and a 0.3 percent increase in July.
In September, the Conference Board LEI for the U.K. declined for the first time this year, which offset last month's gain. As a result, its upward trend has moderated in recent months, and its six-month growth rate has slowed. Meanwhile, the CEI increased marginally, but its six-month change has eased in recent months. Taken together, the composite indexes suggest that economic activity is likely to continue advancing through year-end, but an acceleration in pace is unlikely.
