Metsä Board renaturalises migration routes for fish

Metsä Board, a leading European producer of premium fresh fibre board and a member of the Metsä Group, has launched a project to restore fish habitats in flowing waters in cooperation with WWF Finland and the Regional Centre for Development, Transport and Environment. Construction work on the Mämmenkoski rapids in Äänekoski, central Finland, began in early May and is expected to last one month.

The aim of the renaturation project is to enable fish to migrate naturally from Kuhnamo Lake to Ala-Keitele Lake again. It is also hoped to create natural spawning grounds for lake trout in flowing waters once again. Two dams will be dismantled as part of the project in order to clear the natural migration routes for fish. In addition, the river bed will be renaturalised so that new spawning grounds for the lake trout can be created in the gravel bottom. The project was developed in cooperation with the local fishing industry.
