Cal Poly Graphic Communication Students Sweep Technical Writing Competition

Cal Poly graphic communication students Rachel DeNoble, Christina Barton and Rachel Day won first, second and third place, respectively, in the 2015 Gravure Education Foundation/Flint Group Technical Writing Competition.

DeNoble's first-place paper is titled, "Gravure Cylinder Engraving: A Comparison of Electromechanical & Direct Laser Engraving Methods." Barton was honored for her work, "Gravure and the Packaging Market: How Gravure Continues to Compete in the Packaging Sector," and Day won for "Gravure Growth Opportunities." The essays were developed in Cal Poly's Web Offset and Gravure Printing Technologies course taught by graphic communication Professor Kevin Cooper.

Cal Poly has won first place in the competition six years in a row.

The Flint Technical Writing Competition is a national contest for student technical research papers on the topic of gravure, a major print process. Submitted essays are judged on rigorous standards of relevance to the topic, depth and complexity of research, organization and clarity.

First-place winners are awarded cash prizes of $1,500, second-place winners receive $1,000, and third-place, $500. Award recipients also receive an invitation to the 2015 Educators Breakfast and have their papers published on the Gravure Association of the Americas website.

Additionally, the Gravure Education Foundation awarded four Cal Poly graphic communication students $8,500 in scholarship funds:

— Haley Torres - $1,500 Cerutti Group Scholarship

— Ray Mitsuhiro McDonnell-Horita - $1,500 Gravure Publishing Council Scholarship

— Jessica Fauria - $1,500 Fres-Co Scholarship and $1,500 J.C. Penny Scholarship

— Monique Martinez - $1,500 National Geographic Society Scholarship and $1,000 Warren Daum Memorial Scholarship
