Chicago Tribune Media Group today announced that Peter Kendall has been appointed Managing Editor of the Chicago Tribune, overseeing the daily news operation across digital and print channels. Additionally, Colin McMahon has been named Associate Editor, directing a growing portfolio of digital programming and audience development initiatives. Both Kendall and McMahon will report to Gerould Kern, Editor and Senior Vice President of Chicago Tribune Media Group.
As one of the most prominent media brands in the country, Chicago Tribune Media Group continues to drive innovation throughout the newsroom. The appointments of these two leaders, with significant digital acumen, will continue the evolution of the brand and bring a fresh approach to serving readers.
Kendall, an accomplished journalist and 27-year veteran of the Chicago Tribune, has helped establish the brand as the premier source of news and information throughout Chicagoland. Since 2009, he's served as Deputy Managing Editor, directing the metropolitan staff and the city, state and regional news reports. Under Kendall's direction, the Chicago Tribune produced several award-winning investigative reports, exposing corruption in governments and inequities throughout Chicagoland.
"Peter is an extraordinary leader and journalist," said Kern. "He has led the newsroom through times of tremendous change, and has been a driving force behind the Tribune's mission on behalf of readers."
McMahon, a seasoned 28-year veteran of the Chicago Tribune, will work closely with Kern to help shape the newsroom for success across all platforms, especially digital. Specifically, he will oversee the Entertainment and Lifestyle departments, in addition to directing the newsroom's Trib Nation live events program, while maintaining his role overseeing the Editing and Presentation team for the Tribune's print and digital media.
"Colin is a gifted leader whose imagination and superior organizational skills have been instrumental in an array of innovations since 2008," continued Kern.
Colin previously worked as Cross-Media Editor of the paper, helping to create and launch several new content verticals, including Blue Sky Innovation and Printers Row Journal. He also led the major reorganization of the newsroom staff to support the launch of our next-generation digital platform.
"At a time when we're engaging with more people than ever before, it's critical that we have strong leaders such as Colin and Peter in place to help ensure we are delivering great content across all screens."
In addition to the appointments of Kendall and McMahon, the Chicago Tribune Media Group announced Marcia Lythcott will take on a newly created position as Commentary Editor of the Chicago Tribune, and Margaret Holt will be elevated to the masthead to reflect her important role as Standards Editor of the paper.
Former Chicago Tribune newsroom Associate Editor Joycelyn Winnecke has been appointed President of Tribune Content Agency (TCA) by Tribune Publishing Company. TCA is a premier syndication and licensing business that serves 1,200 clients in 50 countries.
