NY Daily News Washington Bureau Chief and Award-Winning Journalist James Warren Joins Poynter as Chief Media Correspondent

James Warren, the Washington bureau chief for the New York Daily News and a former managing editor and Washington bureau chief of the Chicago Tribune, will join Poynter's digital team as chief media correspondent.

In his new role, Warren will be the lead media news reporter for Poynter.org, generating Morning MediaWire, Poynter's morning newsletter roundup of media news, as well as covering breaking news and writing in-depth stories on major issues. A former media columnist for the Tribune, Warren has worked across platforms as a print and digital journalist, and as a television analyst on MSNBC, Fox News, CNN and Al Jazeera America. He will continue as a contributing editor to the Daily News and write his weekly Sunday op-ed column for the paper. He will be based in Chicago.

"Jim Warren will add personality and perspective to our already outstanding digital team," said Poynter president Tim Franklin. "He brings with him a reporting background and contacts in three of the nation's largest media markets — Washington, Chicago and New York — and he's worked across media platforms in print, television and digital. Jim is someone who understands how the media business works, and he has the ability to bring original, unique insight to our coverage of the industry."

Warren has been a contributor to The Atlantic, The Daily Beast, Huffington Post, Politico and Vanity Fair. During his stint as bureau chief with the Chicago Tribune, he was cited as one of the capital's 50 most influential journalists by Washingtonian magazine, in part because of his columns exposing journalists who were taking large speaking fees from organizations that they were covering.

"I am thrilled for the opportunity to join Poynter, which remains even in this chaotic media landscape, a touchstone for all that is good and honorable about journalism," said Warren.

After returning to the Chicago newsroom in 2001, Warren oversaw the Tribune's features sections and helped to create several successful new additions. He left the Tribune in 2008 and was publisher of the Chicago Reader alternative weekly before becoming a co-founder of the nonprofit local digital news organization, the Chicago News Cooperative (CNC). In addition to generating news on its website, the CNC entered into a partnership with the New York Times to produce local content in the paper's Friday and Sunday editions. He served as the anchor columnist and won several national writing awards, including from the Education Writers Association and the Annie E. Casey Foundation The nonprofit closed its doors after two and a half years, and in 2010 Warren worked as the weekly policy columnist for Bloomberg Business Week. With additional stints as a contributor to The Daily Beast and The Atlantic, Warren eventually joined the Daily News.

Warren lives in Chicago and is married to Cornelia Grumman, a Pulitzer Prize-winning former editorial writer for the Chicago Tribune who is now a top official with the Urban Education Institute at the University of Chicago. They have two sons.

Poynter.org is one of the best read media news sites in the nation. It includes breaking news about the media industry, in-depth stories of issues facing journalism, columns on digital innovation and sports journalism, and analysis from the Institute's expert faculty members.
"Jim's experience in the business -- combined with his passion and distinctive voice -- is unmatched. I'm elated to welcome him to the digital team at Poynter," said Seth Liss, editor of Poynter.org.
