At the recent IMI Technology Showcase in Charlotte North Carolina I had the pleasure of listening to Stephen Fraser, one of the founders of Spoonflower, a business run out of Durham, North Carolina talk about his story about building Spoonflower, an online community and printing business based upon printed textiles. It is now a hugely successful business, but Stephen gave a refreshingly frank and honest presentation about how he and his co-founders built the business from scratch without any printing knowledge whatsoever.

At ThePackHub, we have seen a significant increase in the number of brand owners that are either implementing digital print for packaging initiatives or are in the process of planning future activities. We have seen a number of our brand owner clients taking an increasing interest in what digital print can offer for them – be it personalisation, versioning, short runs, prototyping for market testing. You can deliver fast turnarounds and the quality is great. Brands can engage with consumers like never before, make a point of difference and create a significant competitive advantage. It is certainly an exciting time to be involved in digital print.

A few days ago I headed down to see Sean Moloney and his team at Sun Automation in Bristol to see the new machine he was passionately telling me about over the phone. Sean's enthusiasm was infectious enough to get me to venture the 260 miles or so to meet him, view the machine and write this blog. Proof itself that passion makes a real difference in business.

At the recent InkJet Conference in Dusseldorf it was plain to see that inkjet continues to develop in a number of demanding industrial application areas, so it is not surprising that behind the scenes, in R&D labs around the world, state of the art technology is deployed to assist in innovating new technologies for inkjet. Innovation itself requires technology to assist in the development of products and for them to continually improve.

I was recently at the excellent Smithers Pira event – Digital Print for Packaging in London in December – when I was reminded by the ubiquitous bearded speaker from a creative agency of the expression 'Fail fast' and how important this is in an innovative environment
