Taking the lead at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships

In February, Stora Enso is one of the international sponsors of the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Falun, Sweden. As the global rethinker in paper, biomaterials, wood products and packaging, we aim to take the lead in making sure the championship is run as a sustainable and responsible event.

Rethinking underscores Stora Enso´s philosophy and innovation, challenging ourselves and the outside world. Part of the Championships, the exhibition "Innovation we trust" showcases recent innovations from Stora Enso as well as ABB, Atlas Copco, Electrolux, LKAB, SAAB and SSAB in a joint Innovation Pavilion. The purpose is to create an understanding of how important innovation is in business and sustainability.

Stora Enso is supporting a number of initiatives contributing to a responsible and sustainable event. One example is Stora Enso's climate-smart wooden house in cross-laminated timber (CLT), inaugurated in Falun in March, 2014.

"The house will host a number of events during the competitions, and benefit the inhabitants of Falun after the games are over. Wooden buildings and wood products store carbon dioxide throughout their lifetime, and we are confident that timber construction has a bright future," says Jari Suominen, Executive Vice President, Stora Enso Wood Products.

During the championships, Stora Enso will also help to reduce the carbon emissions by 460 tons CO2 by providing heating from Kvarnsveden Paper Mill via the regional district heating network.

Furthermore, Stora Enso will provide 250 000 paper cups to be used during the event. These will be marked with a symbol to facilitate and increase recycling. We will provide 500 waste bins making sure the waste can be used as a valuable raw material again. Recycling is yet another part of rethinking: waste reuse across Stora Enso is around 97% today, and we are one of the largest consumers of recycled fibre in Europe.

Stora Enso looks forward to this opportunity to celebrate innovation and sustainability while cheering the athletes in action!
