CPI increases hardback capacity ahead of summer peak

Andy Watts: “Offering publishers greater responsiveness and security of supply.” CPI announces it is significantly to expand its hardback book manufacturing operation in the latest phase of its £23 million investment programme.

The UK's largest book printer is to increase its Trade hardback capacity by 50%, with the installation of brand new Kolbus case-making, blocking and casing-in equipment at its site in Chatham. The company currently produces 160 million books each year.

Andy Watts, General Manager of CPI Books, said: "As the UK's leading book manufacturer our aim is to support our customers in a changing market. We're doing this by continuing to invest in the most efficient new technology available, so that we can offer even greater responsiveness and increased security of supply."

The new line will be operational in time for the crucial summer peak manufacturing period, when publishers traditionally launch their key titles.

As well as expanding the European group's 700 million book capacity, the equipment will also offer innovative ways of adding value to the book. CPI believes its innovations will be of considerable interest as publishers seek ways of differentiating the physical product.

The investment in hardback manufacturing at CPI follows an announcement last week that the company is to install its THIRD QUANTUM INKJET WEB PRESS.
