Presto II Digital – the Ideal Solution for Offset and Digital

Nick Jones (left), owner and Managing Director of Ultragraph: “Print finishing is gaining in importance in digital printing in particular.” Right: Martin Harrison (Project Manager at Muller Martini Great Britain). The Presto II Digital saddle stitching system is the perfect solution for graphic arts companies that want to keep their options open for the future in terms of printing modes.

The Muller Martini Presto II Digital is capable of processing both sheet-fed and web printed products in offset and digital printing. It produces at 9,000 cycles per hour, processing up to 30,000 incoming signatures. Thanks to its space-saving design and high level of automation, it is the most economical and powerful saddle stitcher on the market for small to mid-sized runs. Since journals, magazines and brochures have falling run sizes while their product variety is increasing, shorter processing times are required, which means there is a stronger emphasis on digital printing in saddle stitching too. The further development of the proven and successful entry-level saddle stitching line from Muller Martini was therefore just what Ultragraph Ltd. was looking for. The company based in Burscough near Manchester (England) replaced its Bravo with a Presto II Digital, because it is producing considerably more digitally printed magazines, leaflets and brochures since commissioning an HP Indigo.

The increase in digitally printed signatures with shorter runs prompted Nick Jones to change his plans. The managing director of the innovative family-run business, who had originally intended to recondition the company's existing saddle stitcher, knew as soon as he saw the brochure: "I have to have that machine." A visit to Muller Martini's Print Finishing Center in the Swiss city of Zofingen convinced him completely. "I ran ten different jobs myself, and all were impeccable!"

Roughly a year after installing the Presto II Digital with a single-sheet flat pile feeder, a processing folder, six flat pile feeders, a cover feeder and a three-knife trimmer, Ultragraph's investment has been recouped. The saddle stitcher has excelled with its flexibility. The Presto II Digital has passed with flying colors at Ultragraph, processing everything from flyers and leaflets to product catalogs and company magazines in runs ranging from 20 digitally printed copies to 100,000 offset copies. Where possible, several digital short runs are produced back to back using the Presto II Digital. That is possible thanks to the short job changeover times, which also enable interruptions in large jobs if an urgent small-volume job needs to be performed in the meantime.
