The World's Fastest Banknote Processing System, BPS X9, Wins an iF Product Design Award 2014

altThe BPS X9 single note inspection system, the first Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) product to be launched as part of the company's new design line, was immediately selected as a winner of the coveted iF Design Awards 2014 in the "product" discipline. The jury, composed of international experts, was particularly impressed by the innovative combination of form and functionality, which opens the way to new performance standards in banknote processing. The qualities of the BPS X9 are clearly visible in its unique design – combining visionary thinking, precision, and functionality – and represent a significant step forward in G&D's established brand image.

The BPS X9 brings together formal, structural, and color elements in a new design concept based on the use of high-quality, recyclable materials that represents a new departure in the design of banknote processing systems.

Each element of the design is clearly expressed in the final product. All operating functions are integrated into an interactive operator interface, and the use of curved display windows gives the BPS X9 a unique appearance that clearly distinguishes the brand. Practical details such as the switchable interior lighting enable the operator to monitor internal processes without having to stop the machine. Intuitive and efficient user guidance is provided by automatic lifting doors, LED indicators, and a sophisticated graphical user interface.

The BPS X9 was developed specifically for the quality control of newly printed banknotes. It performs exhaustive checks on each banknote to ensure that it complies with the requirements of automated and visual inspection. As a result of this 100-percent quality test, central banks can be assured that the banknotes they issue for circulation always conform to the highest quality standards. With a throughput of up to 44 banknotes per second, the BPS X9 is the fastest banknote processing system in the world.

The internationally renowned, Munich-based design studio N+P Industrial Design was responsible for the design of the BPS X9, working in collaboration with a group of five G&D engineers. This is the third time that this established teamwork arrangement has been recompensed with an iF Product Design Award since 2010.

The iF Design Award is one of the most highly acknowledged major international design contests. This endorsement is a sign of quality recognized throughout the entire world.
